Monarchy: Outdated?

Fri Jun 20, 2008 11:09 am by The Count

I came across a blog recently that was rather critical of the British
Monarchy and the need for a hereditary Head of State, especially one
that lives in luxury and privilege.

To quote:

Peceli and Wendy's Blog
said...

Super-riches and status and privilege by birth are things that
belong to past history, not the 21st century. Symbolic queens and kings
maybe are okay but they ought to ride …

The Political Wind

Fri Jun 20, 2008 11:08 am by The Count

Before I get into the grit of my post here, I will ask the question of
those who live in a "democracy": Who will protect you from your
politicians?

If you live in the United States, the answer is the
Constitution. But the Constitution is simply a piece of paper. I don't
consider it such, but many politicians, including the current US
President, George W. Bush, in fact do. So who …

Absolutism versus Constitutionalism

Mon Jun 16, 2008 10:29 am by The Count

Many folks who are monarchists will agree that a monarchy is superior
to a republic. What they don't agree on is what sort of monarchy should
prevail: an absolute model or a modern constitutional model. Personally
I would argue for something in between, but we'll get to that in a
moment.

I can sympathize with the desire to have an absolute ruler; one crowned by Divine Right from God. This …

UN to UK: "Abolish the Monarchy Now!"

Fri Jun 13, 2008 8:03 am by The Count

The republicans have really gone off their rocker and this time the
source isn't the Labour Party but the United Nations (surprise
surprise).

The full article is here: Abolish The Monarchy UN Report Tells Britain

An excerpt from the article:

<blockquote>

The
UN Human Rights Council says the UK must “consider holding a referendum
on the desirability or otherwise of a written …

Hereditary versus functional Titles

Thu Jun 12, 2008 10:24 am by The Count

Many titles of nobility that you hear of today or read about in
romantic mythology and legend were at some point functional titles, or
rather, offices. A lot of
those offices over time became hereditary either out of necessity or
simply because the same family held the office over and over again.

It is generally true that in order to hold an office of high importance, especially in the Curia …

...or else!!!

Tue Jun 10, 2008 7:53 am by The Count

It's the way many republicans do business: just do it, or else. No
diplomacy, no real dealings, just threats and, at times, even violence.
In 1947, while traveling abroad, His Majesty King Mihai supposedly
abdicated his throne because the Soviet-backed Romanian communists had
grown tired of His Majesty standing in the way of their so-called
"reforms" by abducting and threatening to murder …

Keep pretending

Fri Jun 06, 2008 9:55 am by The Count

A KING with no throne might seem as pointless as an admiral with no
ships. The Nepalese royal family probably feels pretty gloomy as it
packs its possessions and prepares to leave its palace this week
following the country's decision to abolish the monarchy. Claiming to
be reincarnated Hindu gods may not be enough to stop the Nepalese
ex-royals ending up in obscurity, like the pretenders to …

Nepal parties fight for power in new republic

Mon Jun 02, 2008 7:50 am by The Count

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Nepal's leading political parties were locked
in a power struggle on Monday as celebrations of the end of the
monarchy and the dawn of the world's newest republic ebbed.

A specially elected assembly toppled the Himalayan nation's
239-year-old monarchy last week and ordered deposed King Gyanendra to
vacate his palace within two weeks.

But political …

Some Historical information: Medieval Administrators

Sat May 31, 2008 10:51 am by The Count

I love history, and lately, I've been quite interested in medieval administrative positions and titles. Originally these titles and positions were very functional and first appeared with the mass building of castles in medieval Europe. Some of these posts still exist in some way shape or form in modern times, though many of them are mostly ceremonial or have been renamed. Some are no longer in …
